Exporting
OXS and Image Export
Export your pattern as an OXS file for other cross stitch software, or as a crisp image for sharing, printing, and social media.
Not everything ends as a printed chart. Sometimes the destination is another program, a Discord server, or your Instagram feed. Two exports cover those, both in the File menu.
OXS export
OXS is the open exchange format for cross stitch patterns. Exporting one means your Knytstudio pattern opens in WinStitch, MacStitch, FlossCross, and other software that speaks the format — with the design, the floss colors, and your backstitch intact.
This matters more than it sounds: your patterns are not locked in. If you collaborate with someone who charts in a desktop program, or you one day migrate your whole library elsewhere, OXS is the door. We would rather keep you with a great editor than with a locked format.
The export dialog lets you set the title, author, fabric count, and cloth color that get embedded in the file.
Image export
Image export renders your pattern as a PNG — the fast, free way to get your design out of the editor and in front of people.
You control how it looks:
- View mode: colors, hybrid, or symbols, same as on the canvas.
- Grid options: include or omit grid lines, the 10-stitch guide lines, and center marks.
- Labels: row and column numbers on or off.
- Scale: from compact preview to large and print-sharp.
A clean color export with no grid makes the best social media post; a symbols export with grid and labels works as a lightweight chart for a friend. For the full printed-pattern experience — multi-page chart, floss legend, cover page — see PDF export.
Frequently asked questions
Which programs can open Knytstudio's OXS files?
OXS is the open cross stitch exchange format, readable by WinStitch, MacStitch, FlossCross, and other chart software. Your colors, floss codes, and backstitch travel along.
Is image export free?
Yes, image export is included with a free account.
What resolution are exported images?
You choose a scale factor, so the same 100-stitch pattern can be a small preview or a large, print-sharp image. Grid lines and row numbers are optional toggles.
